John, the son of John Joseph and Mary (Gurrall) Hvisch, was born in Yonkers on April 19, 1925. He was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corp., enlisting in 1943 at the age of 17, and was a part of the Pacific campaign and fought in the grueling battle of Okinawa. John was awarded several citations, campaign medals and battle stars for his bravery, including three Battle Stars.
John married Rosemarie Lewandowski on May 3, 1947; she predeceased him in 1988. He is survived by his five loving children, Candice Rosenberg (Lee), Richard Hvisch (Diane), Gerald Hvisch (Dorian), Michelle Sobocinski (Scott) and Andrea Messina (William), 10 adoring grandchildren and five adored great-grandchildren. He will also be greatly missed by his nephew Tom Lichodolik (Cornelia), Carol Lichodolik and Judy Bernard (Tony).
In 1976, John retired from the Westchester County Parkway Police Department. Following his retirement from the Department, he was employed by the American Can Company from 1976 to 1988.
Not one to sit still, John became very active in the Mount Kisco Seniors’ Program, the American Legion and various other veterans’ programs. A lifelong NY Rangers and Yankee fan, he was thrilled to be honored at Yankee Stadium as the Veteran of the Game on October 1, 2017. John was a longtime parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Mount Kisco. His smile and good nature will be sorely missed by all those he touched.
